Joe Casey brings ‘Sex’ to Seattle’s Emerald City Comicon

A repressed former superhero is at the heart of Joe Casey's new comic book "Sex."

Seattle is hosting a major comic-book convention this weekend, but it’s Joe Casey who’s bringing the Sex.

The writer launches his newest Image Comics series at Emerald City Comicon with artist Piotr Kowalski, and Casey will be offering attendees a special edition of the first issue featuring Simon Cooke, a guy who’s retired from his superhero career and now has to deal with being normal after living the life of an isolated vigilante.

And for those who can’t make it to the con, Sex No. 1 will be available in comic shops and online Wednesday.

“Sex is the culmination of a lot of ideas I’ve had about superheroes over the years,” Casey says. “What they mean to the culture, but more importantly, what it means if you take them out of the culture. At this point, I think the effects would be significant.”.

As the Armored Saint, Simon Cooke was Saturn City’s lone superhero for years, yet even he doesn’t realize how repressed he is until faced with an all-new, very much adult future.

“It’s going to be a wild ride of psycho-sexual exploration and intimate confrontations,” says Casey, a TV creator, producer and writer with the entertainment company Man of Action Studios. “It’s a whole new way to look at the genre. We’re taking the fight scenes out of superhero comic books and replacing them with another kind of action scene.”.
